Lateral in this sense is to suggest flexible and unfixed. The simplicity of working just with canvas assist notions of the lateral. The many off shoots of ideas began with a direct line of thought and action. The concept of the maker may have been locked into a fixed viewpoint attached to specific intentions, but what develops as the work evolves, is a loosening of ideas.
