Like a character in a play we are able to come into an
artwork and become part of the overall feeling.
I wish to engage the viewer in an investigation of visual and perceptual
experience. Through the use of materials, navigation within the gallery
space and our own histories, the works engage with an ability to become
more than just the ‘sum of their parts’.
It is not often by choice, but when we view something we immediately
become part of it. Through memory, experience and historical
evidence that make
up each of us as individuals, constituting our own storylines.
“ We do not see things as they are, we see things as we are.”
The idea of the caravan resonates an attempt to re – create our living
spaces, ‘a home away from home’. I have re – created
indicator elements within the works through reconstituting found objects.
Through these indicators such as aluminium extrusions, specific surface
materials and other fixtures I have objectified the false, denying their ‘almost’ functional
qualities. The work sits in ambiguity between art and architecture.
“ In a space we do not recognise, we search for our position.”
The absorption of memory, both within the surfaces and ourselves
is apparent through the endeavour to layer, paint – over and re decorate, scratches
and wear and tear of surface material. I am not concerned with these ‘imperfections’ as
mishaps, but rather as elements of these narratives. The DIY improvisation
we encounter whilst camping or holidaying.
“
Stories may be attached to such places making them resonate with history
and experience. Although the stories change in the re – telling the
place provides an anchor of stability and credibility. The very existence
of physical places validates the re – woven histories”
